CALGARY ALLIED ARTS FOUNDATION
The Calgary Allied Arts Foundation (CAAF) has a long
and distinguished history in the Calgary Arts
community. In partnership with the City of Calgary,
CAAF's vision is to promote Calgary as a leading
visual arts centre.
Our mission is to promote, manage and exhibit the
Civic Art Collection; advise City Council and
administration on visual art matters; and serve as
an advocate for the visual arts.
WHAT IS THE CALGARY ALLIED ARTS FOUNDATION?
CAAF is a not for profit organization which is
responsible for the stewardship of the Civic Art
Collection, development and implementation of
policies and procedures, and advising the city on
matters related to the visual arts. (Civic Art
Policy approved by City Council, June 10, 1996)
WHAT IS THE CITY OF CALGARY'S CIVIC ART COLLECTION?
The City of Calgary's Civic Art Collection has been
in existence since the early 1900s and includes
paintings, prints, textile pieces and sculpture. Its
over 700 works are valued in excess of $3
million. The collection represents Calgary's
history, its connection with historical events and
the achievement of artists who have been nurtured
here. The collection exists through the spirit of
generosity and giving for which Calgarians are
internationally recognized. It is unique in that the
majority of works have come to the collection
through donations, bequests and endowments and
therefore the collection grows each year.
ENDOWMENTS
Since 1957, several noted artists and friends of the
arts have made significant bequests to CAAF and the
visual arts community. The Calgary Foundation
manages these funds and purchases are made for the
City of Calgary Civic Art Collection through the
interest generated by the endowments. Key
contributors to The Endowment Funds are:
H.B. HILL - 1957,
WES IRWIN - 1978,
JIM AND MARION NICOLL - 1986 and
DOUGLAS MOTTER - 1994
WHAT IS CAAFS FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE CIVIC ART COLLECTION
In 2001 CAAF provided $27,199.00 plus in excess of
3000 volunteer hours towards the development and
preservation of the Civic Art Collection,
administrative services and development of visual
arts policy.
